Sabian Symbols: Chiron in Aries

This article is written by James Burgess, a writer and teacher of astrology. You can read more on Sabian Symbols and his approach to astrology on his website Sabian Mysteries.

In this article, we are tracing the passage of Chiron through the Zodiac from its ingress at 0 degrees Aries on 18 February 2019.

We have never before observed Chiron in Aries since it was only discovered in 1977 and has yet to complete a full 51-year cycle.

Chiron is called the wounded healer because its principle is that we need to identify our woundedness, (which to some extent we all have) in order to bring healing attention to it.

When we do so with the correct attitude of mind, healing can occur. The key to unlocking its capacity to heal is in our ability and willingness to shift our perception. Thus, Chiron teaches us to look at our woundedness in a new way so that we can revise our sense of exactly what the wound is, what it means, and how it can be turned to our advantage.

To take this idea of a perceptual shift up a notch, we see that our species needs to change its awareness about how to live differently so that we can heal the wounded planet which we call home.

In 2019, the forward thrust of this mythical centaur was impressively fast as it sped through the first 5 degrees of Aries, drawing our attention in rapid succession to the first 5 Sabian Symbols associated with Aries.

Together they tell their story of how to emerge from unconsciousness towards full awareness.

If you want to go into more detail you can consult a summarised Chiron ephemeris for the period under review, but here, for its forward movement, is listed the 2019 dates as a reminder:

  • Chiron in Aries 1 from 18 February to 8 March 2019
  • Chiron in Aries 2 from 8 March to 25 March 2019
  • Chiron in Aries 3 from 25 March to 11 April 2019
  • Chiron in Aries 4 from 11 April to 29 April 2019
  • Chiron in Aries 5 from 29 April to 22 May 2019

Perhaps we can look back to see whether we can identify how we were touched by this transit previously, knowing what we might expect to find – at least in conceptual terms.

In Aries 1, we would expect to see the seed of an idea germinate into something tangible. It may be that this occurred when Chiron briefly visited Aries 1 previously (April 17 – May 7, 2018), and yet the earlier time might have lacked the certainty that was observable in 2019.

Aries 2 is a response to challenge whether our idea is both robust enough, and appropriate for our social group; it is a time for adjustment and correction, so that our project has the social relevance required by Aries 3.

In Aries 4 we might expect things to click into place because we have worked out a more balanced and comfortable position where our own needs and desires tie up nicely with others, or indeed one special partner.

In Aries 5 our new idea somehow takes flight and we get the sense of a real shift of perspective – we’re up and running, yet perhaps still a little uncertain as to the exact direction to direct things.

Chiron entered Aries 6 on 22 May 2019 and began slowing down towards its station in August, and then was into its retrograde period. In this period the lack of clarity was resolved as we set our sights upon clear goals. The first seed of an idea had become a plan of action!

In the many months since then, its retrograde motion has been a time for reflection, reconsideration, a reworking of details and so on – and even when that ended on 14 December 2019, it progressed forward again though already-visited degrees.

From 4 April 2020, Chiron will go beyond its previous limits and awaken new perceptions of the subsequent Sabian degrees. Indeed, as you read this you are becoming a contributor to those new perceptions.

More detailed articles will become available as each degree is transited; in summary, we can be on the lookout for these developments:

In Aries 7, Chiron will stimulate us to focus our attention and discover how to balance two sides of the work we are doing – the inner and the outer. What we achieve in the world is a mirror of what qualities and realizations we have within ourselves, and these two aspects of our endeavors need to claim equal importance.

In Aries 8, we are likely to receive a caution about the need for deeper empathy and a higher level of consideration of the effects of what we are doing on both sides – inner and outer. Greater wisdom is required, which we may find forthcoming through counseling, meditation, and prayer.

In Aries 9, we are afforded a ‘psychic overview’ by which we get a higher perspective on the context of our projects, and how what we are doing fits together within the greater scheme of life. All that we do echoes indefinitely into the future sending waves of influence out with an unimaginable reach
of consequences, so a glimpse of that possible future can help us fine-tune our intentions now.

In Aries 10, Chiron is slowing down towards retrogradation, so we can assume that this degree’s effect will be more emphatic. The teachings we are experiencing will become deeper and clearer as a result of enhanced objectivity and the resultant reinterpretation of context and the implications of our actions.

On 12 July 2020, Chiron is stationary and will retrace its path; during this long period of months until 8th April 2021, we can check and double-check that its lessons have been delivered properly.
